Using a Scatter Plot in Qlik Sense

In a scatter plot or chart of Qlik Sense, we represent such instances as dots or bubbles which contains two or three measure values for them. for instance, sales and quantity of distinct products displayed by one dot or bubble. So, once you make a scatter plot in Qlik Sense, we select two measure fields for every x-axis and y-axis against one dimension field. If you add a 3rd measure of an equivalent dimension, its values will reflect within the size of the bubble.

Scatter Plot in Qlik Sense

In the scatter plot shown within the image above, the 2 measures selected are ‘Sales’ and ‘Quantity’ and therefore the dimension whose values are going to be plotted as bubbles against the 2 measure values is ‘Customer’. The third measure which is represented by the dimensions of the bubble is ‘Cost’ i.e. more the value , greater the dimensions of the bubble. you’ll use color coding to ascertain the density of knowledge points when an outsized data set is employed during a scatter plot. This helps in visualizing the dense areas or hot spots within the plot which potentially gives useful and important insights to the analyst.

Advantages and Limitations of Qlik Sense Scatter Plot

  1. Pros of Scatter Plot

Scatter plots are significant in visualizing data as they show the contribution of various factors within the performance or status of a component which is being analyzed. Suppose, we’ve a scatter plot as a visualization for sales analysis. Now, we’ve taken product category or different product types because the dimension which can be plotted within the graph using two values, total sales done, and total units sold for every category of product.

So, just watching the position of the bubble made on the scatter plot, you’ll analyze the recognition of a product, because the parameters indicating popularity are what proportion units of it were sold and for a way much (total). Thus, scatter plots are very useful once you want to seek out out the correlation or relation between two or three measure values like one dimension. It easily contains, manages and displays large data sets which are to be analyzed.

  1. Cons of Scatter Plot

However, what has begin as a drawback of using scatter plot is that it’d often appear difficult to know for inexperienced users. this is often possible due to scatter plot follows a special concept of creation, i.e. the 2 measures are on x-axis and y-axis and therefore the dimension values are represented as bubbles. It gets more complex when a 3rd measure is added which is shown because the sizes of bubbles. So, the chart should be made in such how that it must contain many informative bits thereon in order that users, no matter their technical capabilities, can understand the chart.

Properties Panel of Qlik Sense

The properties panel of a lively scatter plot within the editor provides many options for managing the properties of the scatter plot. There are several sections within the properties panel from where you’ll select and set different aspects of scatter plot accordingly.

  1. Data

From this section, you’ll add new dimensions and measures and manage the old ones. Basically, you’ll give labels to the measures which can be displayed on the scatter plot, also, you’ll edit expressions of the measures if you would like to vary the sort of aggregation that’s applied on the measures.

  1. Add-ons

From the Add-ons sections, you’ll add references of other data sets, or visualizations both for x-axis and y-axis. So, put conditions which control the airing of the visualization.

iii. Appearance

The appearance section is to manage all the looks specific elements of a scatter plot. allow us to discuss some sub-sections of the looks section and what we will do with the choices .

  1. General

The first is that the General section from where you’ll add titles, subtitles, and footnotes which are informative texts explaining the scatter plot.

  1. Color and Legends

Next is that the Appearance section, from where you’ll set the coloring criterion of the bubbles on the scatter plot. So, you’ll select coloring from four options, i.e. single color, color by dimension, color by expression and color by measure.

If you decide on the only color option, you’ll select the colour from the colour options and therefore the bubbles of the scatter plot are going to be displayed therein color, as shown within the screenshots attached below.

If you decide on the colour by dimension option, then each dimension value will have a definite color because no two dimensions will an equivalent . you’ll select the colours from reminder 12 colors or 100 colors. It depends upon the amount of dimensions your dataset contains. Here, you furthermore may get the choice of show/hide legend which are descriptive texts showing which color corresponds to what dimension value.

And, if you decide on the colour by measure option then you get gradient color options to settle on from. you’ll also select from the 2 or three measures you’ve got added within the plot. within the resultant scatter plot, the colour grading shows in legend or reference bar given along side it. As you’ll see within the image of scatter chart given below, the colour shades are changing as we move from rupees 2000 to rupees 25,000. and therefore the colors of the dots or bubbles also change like that moving from left to all along the x-axis.
